36th
Annual Griffith Park Sidecar rally.
Well another really fun and exciting Sidecar
rally has come and gone. With over 200 sidecarists, a few
thousand spectators and participants in attendance. This was a LA's most popular and coolest event of the day! Here is a recap of the days activities both on Sunday, as well as on Saturday's evening dinner. Sunday Oct 28th 2007 started out as
a warm and sunny day. 6:00 am, Doug and crew show
up at the park
to set up tent, tables and chairs. Coffee in hand and maybe a yawn or two, mixed in with a few cobwebs left over from the previous nights activities. Everybody got busy, getting ready to make this another
fun and memorable day. 6:30 and Wendy showed up
with the club tent and fresh Randy's donuts. Yummy, hot coffee and donuts. The perfect sidecarist breakfast. Sidecars from the local LA area started rolling in and claiming their spots along the Crystal Springs park area. Ernie Aragon pulled up early in his four wheeled gigantic sidecar (Are you sure that's a sidecar Ernie?) Most of us call it a RV. Chito Pastor was the first of the dual sport sidecars to show up. He had a interesting intercom set up on display for
those interested in high end off road use. Steve Woodward
Vice President of the United Sidecar association got there early. A few local sidecar dealers showed up to lend their support to the day's activities. Kevin Mahoney, distributor of Royal Enfield and Cozy
sidecars was on hand to show a touch of retro to the
spectators.
By 8:00 am half of the sidecars on display
were ready to show their rigs to the curious.
And there were many
curious spectators there. Through out the day we could hear people say, they saw the episode of Huell Howser's California Gold the week before the rally. Most of these people had no idea that this rally was such a cool and long running event. We had so many two wheeled riders show up, that the designated parking for bikes overflowed and created a small parking jam. But that got taken care of right away. Seen walking around the event was Perry King, Dean
Hummer and Scotty Hewitt. Club member
Steve Eisenberg took pictures of the days activities, and those will be up by next week on this website. Mike Braverman had some really neat and rare memorabilia on display. Speaking of neat and unusual, one the the rigs displayed looked like it came out of a old comic book. Though I suspect it was not a sidecar by its truest definition. It still had three wheels. It looked like something from a Flash Gordon comic book or a Flash Gordon movie. You remember the one
with the, dare I say "low tech special effects"
This rig was really way cool.
Made out of aircraft aluminum skin. I
don’t know how many hours this person put into creating this,
but it was a
one of a kind for sure! I've only gone to a few of these rallies, but the one thing that I've seen here consistent with this event is that. Every sidecar is unique! Every Sidecarist puts in some personal touch of themselves into their rigs. And last, every sidecar has its own story. Here are the numbers by brand of rigs in
attendance. 17 Urals, 32 Harleys, 29 BMW's, 17 British, 45
Japanese,
3 Scooters and 14 Others. Doug say's there are a few missing from this count. The SoCal Sidecar club had their tent and a full color banner up on display. We were answering questions and had a few new members sign up. We also had our club tee shirts and bikers bears there for sale. All and all, it was another really good rally. Something that we all can be very proud of being a part of. We are after all one big Sidecar family. Thank you Doug for continuing to put on this fine event. BACK |
